Life is full of choices and what you choose to think, say or do, will always reflect how other people respond to you. So it’s important when you hear your potential business partner express a problem or need, want or desire, such as a need for money or good health, that you are not tempted to launch into a presentation before talking about and discovering why they want it and the history behind how they came to be in these situations.

It is also important to help people bring up what they know and don’t know and what they want, by allowing them to come to their own conclusions. They need to feel their pain NOT yours and hear their story NOT yours, so that they can motivate themselves to take the necessary action to change their lives. You my friend, happen to be presenting them with an opportunity to do just that, and your job as an entrepreneur and the CEO of your own company is to determine, through a brief initial interview, if the person you are speaking with is someone you want on your board of directors.

Your product(s) and opportunity may be broadly beneficial to the populace, but not every person has the essential qualities you are looking for in your potential business partners and team leaders. Skills can be developed, but desire can only be generated from within. After asking a few key questions, you will be able to determine whether the person you are speaking with has that desire within themselves and is willing to commit to putting forth the effort required to build their business or not. If they are, you can direct them to the next step in your interview process.

If not, OR not at the present moment, simply acquire their permission to stay in contact through email and move on. Remember, you are engaged in the sorting process: a quest for the BEST business partners for YOU. Not just anyone will do...!

People like to do things for their reasons NOT yours, and here's where understanding the "Natural Law of Giving" can help you and your potential business partner achieve a win-win outcome. The Law of Giving works like this: What you give is what you get. Other people's actions and words are a reflection of your actions and words. It's like a smile. If you smile at someone they will usually smile back :-) However, this natural law can work against you if you put pressure on others by Telling, Presenting or Persuading people to do things you want them to do.

If you come from this self-serving position, most people will tell you back! How? By one or more of three ways:

1. Rejection

2. Objections

3. Passive Aggression. (When people say they will do something and don't! This is also called "buyers remorse".)

In selling, if you want the Law of Giving to work for you and have people listen to you and your solution, then listen to them with the intent to understand them first! By observing and if necessary, changing two things - the way you think and the way you communicate - you can achieve the success you are looking for without the anxiety normally associated with selling. You can bring harmony into your life and the lives of others in a way that assures EVERY conversation you have ends with something positive :-)

Yes, it's not about you but don't forget that your story is powerful in convincing someone else that it can work for them too. I think sometimes we forget that people want to see the evidence! If it's working for you, chances are it might work for them too.
